Bowling Returns to Dorchester County

Thanks to Cambridge entrepreneurs John and Monica Russell for returning bowling to Cambridge. The Russells – 18-year community residents who also own Russell Paving and Tire World – are the new owners/operators of the Choptank Bowling Center on Goodwill Avenue just off Washington Street.

Closed for several years, the bowling alley reopened in January following major renovations and repairs. The Russells won a $100,000 prize in June to further support the renovations as the First-place Winner of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America’s national competition Extreme Bowling Center Makeover.

The bowling center offers a modern family-friendly atmosphere where adults, children and groups can have fun. Area businesses and their employees can sign up for teams on one of the center’s many league nights.

“A league is a great way to get your company’s name into the community and promote your business,” according to Monica Russell, “and bowling teams can help encourage teamwork among employees.”

Russell says they also provide lunch deliveries to Cambridge-area businesses from the bowling center’s kitchen menu that includes sandwiches, subs, baskets and pizza.

To support youth achievement, the Russells launched “Games for Grades” which offers one free game for every “A” earned on a report card from a local school.

The Choptank Bowling Center is open Monday – Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Friday – Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.; and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The center’s full-service Pro Shop sells balls, towels and other equipment and offers certified ball fitters/drillers to customize bowling balls.
