Cambridge Federal Intern Joins Air Force

Recently, Kairan Nichols, an information technology intern at Cambridge Federal left for the United States Air Force. Kairan is a Cambridge local who graduated from Cambridge South Dorchester High School and was a student at the Dorchester Career and Technology Center. To celebrate the end of an internship and the beginning of a new chapter, Cambridge Federal arranged a plane ride for Kairan with the Aeronautics LoB Vice President, Michael Catron. Mr. Catron is an ex US Navy F-18 Top Gun flight instructor who took Kairan for a ride in his experimental airplane.  The two flew together for an hour and Kairan really enjoyed his time in the sky. Startup Roadshow Visits Dorchester

The Startup Maryland Roadshow stopped in Dorchester County on its statewide tour.  Striving to connect innovation communities to the innovation economy, the tour focuses on four main initiatives; connection, celebration, coaching, and capital. The annual tour provides startup’s with access to the coaching, capital and connection that they may not be privy to otherwise. The tour stop in Dorchester began at Hooper’s Island Oyster Aquaculture in Hooper’s Island. Then the next morning the bus stopped at Factory F on Dorchester Ave in Cambridge. Several stakeholders including the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and Preservation Maryland gathered for the morning visit in support of the vision of Factory F. Later in the afternoon the bus stopped at the Eastern Shore Innovation Center.  Several businesses and resource partners including the Maryland Department of Commerce, TEDCO and the Dorchester Chamber attended. Two businesses pitched their idea on the bus. Immediately after the ESIC visit an impromptu pop-up party at Factory F began. The community was invited and  welcomed to take a look at the possibilities for the building. F³ Tech Business Accelerator Program

hotDesks, a network of coworking spaces on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, has announced the F³ Tech Business Accelerator Program.  This program gives entrepreneurs and startup companies working in the fields of agriculture, seafood, and environmental technology the opportunity to benefit from five months of mentoring, training, and support.  HotDesks propel them from idea to commercialization of a product or service. This is the program’s first year and will prepare participating startups for investment.  F³ Tech is the only business accelerator program in Maryland dedicated to advancing innovations and technologies in resource-based industries such as agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, bioenergy, and the environment. The Accelerator program will be held from September 2016 through January 2017. Five startup companies will be accepted into the F³ Tech program. UPDATE: Eastern Shore Innovation Center

UPDATE: The Eastern Shore Innovation Center (ESIC) opened four months ago and is now at 80 percent capacity. The following businesses have signed license agreements and are part of the growing innovative community at the Dorchester Regional Technology Park: Cambridge Federal, Mapping Technologies, Dalcom Engineering, Garvey Environmental, Quevera, F.L Holdings, Purdy Group, and Patrick’s Northeast Kitchens. There are current negotiations with another new business. The Co-working space is now open with the first new member, SunXAnalytical, and a reciprocity agreement with other co-working spaces on the Eastern and Western shore. Patriot Steel Fabrication, Inc. (PSFI) is a steel fabricator specializing in rails and stairs located in Cambridge, Maryland. PSFI is regionally focused on Washington DC, Baltimore, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland and Delaware. However, they ship products nationwide via a common carrier. PSFI is able to assist General Contractors and the larger fabricators with their miscellaneous fabricating requirements. PSFI opened two years ago and employ 12 people. Warwick Expands Services

Warwick Fulfillment Solutions, located in Hurlock, recently expanded its service offering to include embroidery. This new in-house service came about to support the need of some of Warwick’s ecommerce apparel customers, namely Rachel Roy.com and Tuckernuck.com.  Warwick hired an in-house embroiderer and purchased a state of the art machine. Warwick offers the embroidery service to its fulfillment clients as well as to local business who may want to produce embroidered apparel or other items with their logo, company name or slogan.   “Our Clients were outsourcing their embroidery needs which resulted in delayed shipments to their customers. SCORE Mentoring Workshop

The Eastern Shore Innovation Center hosted a start-up mentoring workshop for its tenants through SCORE. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. Bud Cass, SCORE Chapter Leader and Ed French, SCORE Mentor, gave a presentation on the value the mentorship program can add to start-ups and existing businesses. Supported by the Small Business Administration with a network of over 11,000 volunteers and 320 Chapters nationwide, SCORE can provide free, confidential business counseling, volunteer mentors, and business tools. More than Meets the Eye

Focusing on re-purposed and up-cycled designs, Liv Again carries brand names, fair trade items, and home décor.  All items sold at Liv Again have a unique story and brings its own originality. Liv Again also features an open-space art gallery/bar on the second floor with pieces by original artists. The Art Bar is located on the 2nd floor of the historic Nathan building above Liv Again’s furniture store. Even though the upper level Art Bar is 2500 sq. ft., it is a warm and inviting space. The gallery contains a unique collection of art that celebrates diverse art styles and cultures. There is also a performance stage and a 17 ft. wine bar. The Art Bar sponsors monthly entertainment events such as 3rd Friday Paint nights and 3rd Saturday poetry/open mic nights.  Every 2nd Saturday, they host an artist reception and live entertainment. Incubator Manager Hired

The Dorchester County Economic Development Office is pleased to welcome Steve Dolbow, the new manager of the Eastern Shore Innovation Center. As manager, Dolbow is responsible for developing programs and managing the business incubator located within the Dorchester Regional Technology Park. In addition, he is responsible for managing the “innovation network” for Dorchester County and providing community leadership regarding entrepreneurship and economic development innovations in our region. Keasha Haythe, director of the Dorchester County Economic Development office said, “Steve brings several years of experience and we are happy to have him as part of the team.
