Startup Roadshow Visits Dorchester

The Startup Maryland Roadshow stopped in Dorchester County on its statewide tour.  Striving to connect innovation communities to the innovation economy, the tour focuses on four main initiatives; connection, celebration, coaching, and capital. The annual tour provides startup’s with access to the coaching, capital and connection that they may not be privy to otherwise. The tour stop in Dorchester began at Hooper’s Island Oyster Aquaculture in Hooper’s Island. Then the next morning the bus stopped at Factory F on Dorchester Ave in Cambridge. Several stakeholders including the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy and Preservation Maryland gathered for the morning visit in support of the vision of Factory F. Later in the afternoon the bus stopped at the Eastern Shore Innovation Center.  Several businesses and resource partners including the Maryland Department of Commerce, TEDCO and the Dorchester Chamber attended. Two businesses pitched their idea on the bus. Immediately after the ESIC visit an impromptu pop-up party at Factory F began. The community was invited and  welcomed to take a look at the possibilities for the building. SCORE Mentoring Workshop

The Eastern Shore Innovation Center hosted a start-up mentoring workshop for its tenants through SCORE. SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground, grow and achieve their goals through education and mentorship. Bud Cass, SCORE Chapter Leader and Ed French, SCORE Mentor, gave a presentation on the value the mentorship program can add to start-ups and existing businesses. Supported by the Small Business Administration with a network of over 11,000 volunteers and 320 Chapters nationwide, SCORE can provide free, confidential business counseling, volunteer mentors, and business tools. Economic Development Day

On February 16, 2016, Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA) members came together in Annapolis to celebrate the 2nd Annual Economic Development Day. Over 60 economic developers attended and were able to connect with legislators and share information about Economic Development projects throughout the state of Maryland. Deputy Secretary of the Maryland Department of Commerce, Ben Wu and Managing Director of Marketing & Communications at Maryland Department of Commerce, Alison Mayer presented a strategic plan prepared by the Maryland Economic Development Commission. MEDA Executive Director said, “It was a particularly special day as MEDA was presented with a House Resolution by the House Delegates. The Resolution was in recognition and celebration of MEDA’s 55th Anniversary. Ready, Set, GROW

The Governor’s Office of Minority Affairs (GOMA) is offering a small business outreach event for the Eastern Shore. The event is tailored to assist small, minority and women owned businesses compete for State contracting opportunities. The Ready, Set, GROW outreach event will have procurement officers and local buyers on hand to discuss specific opportunities available at their agencies. A network session will provide attendees the opportunity to meet with local and state procurement representatives. Economic Developers Join for Conference

The Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA) recently held its 2015 Summer Conference:  Marketing and Business Attraction at the World Trade Center in Baltimore. Economic Developers from across the state joined to learn about product differentiation, best ways to position your product, and how to identify the value of your product in a competitive market. Dorchester County Economic Development Director and MEDA President Keasha Haythe presided over the conference. Sponsored by the Maryland Port Administration, the morning opened with a presentation on business attraction given by Joseph Greco, Sr., director of Intermodal Trade Development for the Port of Baltimore. Next, Sandy Sponaugle, owner of Platinum PR, moderated a panel on Product Differentiation. Ammanuel Moore, economic development manager for Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), moderated a panel on Techniques and Strategies.  Haythe sat on the panel and gave examples of leading marketing strategies used in Dorchester County. “Commonly mistaken for other similarly named areas like Dorchester County in South Carolina, we needed to differentiate ourselves and distinguish the differences through our physical attributes. Calling All Start-ups & Entrepreneurs

Do you have a good idea for a business but need resources to help with capital and coaching? Pitch your idea during the Maryland Startup bus tour. The annual Pitch Across Maryland tour focuses on innovative start-ups and entrepreneurs. The three-week excursion includes several celebratory stops throughout the state including Cambridge on September 15, 2015. Entrepreneurs can pitch their story and feature their new venture in a studio located in the bus. Startup Maryland provides a connection to an audience, peers and investors through promotion. Entrepreneurs should bring their “A” game, have fun and be prepared to celebrate this unique opportunity. Videos will be posted online for two voting competitions: Fan Favorites and Strongest Potential for High Growth. The top pitches will be reviewed by a set of esteemed institutional venture capitalists and angel investors. Over 150 videos were filmed during the 2014 tour. MACo’s Annual Conference

The Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) Summer Conference “Energize. Mobilize. Capitalize.” will be held in Ocean City from August 12–15, 2015.  MACo is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to representing the needs of the local governments to the Maryland General Assembly.  The conference brings in an estimated 2,000 local government officials, 250 venders, and offers 25 educational sessions. This year’s annual conference will focus on the economy from the local government perspective, how to foster economic growth, and improve the business climate.  The four-day conference will feature Keynote Speaker Beth Ziesenis, who is an author, speaker, and technology consultant.  Many other informative sessions and panels are also planned. Groundbreaking Event at Technology Park

The Dorchester County Economic Development Office recently hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Eastern Shore Innovation Center, the Eastern Shore’s first purpose-built incubator.  The purpose of the Eastern Shore Innovation Center is to spur sustainable economic vitality in the region through high-growth entrepreneurship and innovative practices in the business community.  Start-up businesses entering the incubator will have the opportunity to grow and take advantage of business resources until they graduate out after two years.  Elected officials, business owners, and community members joined together to celebrate the event. The ceremony began with Dorchester County Economic Development Director Keasha Haythe welcoming attendees.  “I want to thank each of you for the commitment to come together to create a stronger and more prosperous community,” said Haythe.  The morning was a much-anticipated gathering for financial partners who have worked together for years to make the day a reality.
